  Native American Indian Historical Games

REVIVING INDIAN HERITAGE AND CULTURE TO SECURE OUR FUTURE

Executive Summary

The

Native American Indian Historical Games

The Mission:

We will use the National Congress of American Indians Resolution to support the Native American Indian Historical Games. This will be accomplished by reintroducing the historical games, once played by Native Americans, and have Native Americans engage in national and International recognized competitions. These Sporting Events and other American Indian Culture events will be used to promote the education and preservation of American Indian Culture and Heritage. The education through these Native American Events will offer solutions to help prevent the high prevalence of diet and lifestyle-related health disparities which plague Native American Indian youth.

The Purpose:

This project brings the opportunity to promote the ESPN International’s “Natives of the Americas” Traditional Sports Events. They are all in the spirit of Traditional Native American Sporting Engagement and to share the Excitement, Understanding, and Sporting Skills to people around the World.  These types of events can lead to Peace, Health, Education, Understanding of others, and Uniting all Nations. The games provide a unique chance to reconnect Native Americans with their heritage, culture and offer a more accurate portrayal of how they lived and played. Many modern games originated from the original format of these Native American Historical Games and in this original format many have never been seen by modern man.

“Create a sport event that is a competition comprised of exciting traditional indigenous sport athletes from around the Americas (North, South and the Caribbean) competing on an annual basis. The competition contains day and evening events from a list of over 30 Native of the Americas competition.

  • This project is a catalyst to explore the value of sport in the life of indigenous peoples and to share this traditional sport and cultural experience with sport fans throughout the ESPN Network.

A little about Ken Klaudt the Chief Commissioner of the Native American Indian Historical Games and originator of this program

Ken Klaudt (Chief Standing Strong), a Native American historian and an elder of the Mandan, Hidatsa & Arikara Tribes, and direct descendant of Little Soldier a scout at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, son of Sitting Bull and from the village that found and raised Sacagawea who later lead Lewis and Clark expedition West. He has exhaustively researched the games first played on this continent by indigenous people. Together with this research Ken has been planning these games for over forty years, and through them hopes to turn his dream into a reality. "This gives us a chance to describe who we are. The games will unite tribes from across the U.S. and Canada, providing a unique chance to reconnect Native Americans with their heritage, culture, and offer a more accurate portrayal of how they lived and played.

About Wings.

Mission Statement:

“The mission of Wings is to enhance the quality of life for American Indian youth. In partnership with Native communities, Wings uses Running as a catalyst to empower American Indian and Alaskan Native youth to take pride in themselves and their cultural identity, leading to increased self esteem, health and wellness, leadership, hope, balance, and harmony.”

Programs Measurement:
A Wings survey conducted in 2000, showed a 99% high school graduation rate, with 94% of our participants going on to college. Results of the survey indicated that overall, WOA participants are attaining a higher level of education, have lower incidences of arrests, less use of alcohol and illegal drugs, are having their first child a year or two later than average, and they are more physically active and maintaining healthier lives than their same-age peers in the larger American Indian and general populations.
